If you are coming from the train station then you can do the tour of the city in the following way. If you are coming from the harbor because you are a cruise passenger then you have to do it in the other way.

First step : From the train station you can take the subway and go to the typical « vieux port » (old harbor) from Marseille. This is one of the most famous place of the city. Every day from 8 a.m to 1 p.m there is a fish market where the fisherman can directly sell you his fresh fish. Here you can fell the atmosphere and all the mediterranean culture of Marseille.

Second step : From here you can go to the basilica « Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde ». This basilica has a big place in the heart of the resident of Marseille even those who are not believer. In deed you can see it from everywhere in the city. In this place, the resident of Marseille and the tourist love to ask something to the Virgin : a trip without problems, success in the exam, a child, … This is a really important tradition for the city and it is also important to light a candle from time to time.
If you are courageous you can ascend it by foot but if I can give you a piece of advice, you would better take the bus n°60 because there is still a lot of things to discover in this beautiful city.
You can also take a little train which will take you from the harbor to the basilica and will also drive you by the sea side before arrived.

After eating you should go the museum of european civilisation : the MUCEM. Even if you don’t want to visit it you should go just for the beauty of the place. This museum is divided in 2 part a modern one and a old one joined by an iron footbridge. Both are in a perfect harmony with the other. This is a very relaxing and peaceful place to have a drink or just enjoy of the sea over there.

Last step : Near to the MUCEM there is a place called « les docks de la joliette » where you can go and do some atypical shopping in more than 60 shops. You can find some clothes, decorations for your home, cup cakes for the bath, a wine bar, …
The building of 365 meters long has been built in 1856 for store all the commodity in transit in the harbor. Now it has been renovated to welcome new shops in a modern vibes. This place also deserved to the seen.
