Savon de Marseille
Savon de Marseille (or “Marseille Soap”) is one
of the most well-known local products in Provence. You can’t miss the visit of
a traditional fabric!
How did it appear?
Soap has always been used in France. Nevertheless,
we know this particular soap was created from the Alep soap in Syria. Thanks to
crusades in Spain and Italy, it came to the fabulous city of Marseille. From
the 12th Century, fabrics appear. The main product they use to
create the soap is… Olive oil, of course! Even the king Louis XIV was a big fan
of this soap and made an edict to give rules for its fabrication. It helped to give
it its really strong reputation and highlight all the Provençal know-how.
What is it used for?

The funny belief… It is said it helps not to
get cramps if it is put at the bottom of the bed!
